[05] Surah Al-Ma'idah [The Table Spread With Food]
Ayat 52. And you see those in whose hearts there is a disease (of hypocrisy), they hurry to their friendship, saying: "We fear lest some misfortune of a disaster may befall us." Perhaps Allah may bring a victory or a decision according to His Will. Then they will become regretful for what they have been keeping as a secret in themselves.
Ayat 53. And those who believe will say: "Are these the men (hypocrites) who swore their strongest oaths by Allah that they were with you (Muslims)?" All that they did has been in vain (because of their hypocrisy), and they have become the losers.
Tafseer of Surah Al Ma'idah Ayat 52 & 53. Those in whose hearts is a disease - thou sees how eagerly they run about amongst them, saying: "We do fear lest a change of fortune bring us disaster." Ah! perhaps Allah will give (thee) victory, or a decision according to His will. Then will they repent of the thoughts which they secretly harboured in their hearts. Cf. 2:10. 53. And those who believe will say: "Are these the men who swore their strongest oaths by Allah, that they were with you? " All that they do will be in vain, and they will fall into (nothing but) ruin. The Hypocrites, while matters were doubtful, pretended to be with Muslims, but were in league with their enemies. When matters came to a decision and Allah granted victory to Islam, their position was awkward. They were not only disowned by the Muslims, but the Muslims could well say in reproach to their enemies: "Are these the men who swore friendship for you? What was their friendship worth to you? Where are they now?"
English Translation of Hadith
Hazrat Anas bin Malik (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Prophet [SAWW](PBUH) said, "There are three qualities whoever has them, will taste the sweetness of Iman: To love Allah and His Messenger [SAWW](PBUH) more than anyone else; to love a slave (of Allah) only for (the sake of) Allah; and to abhor returning to infidelity after Allah has saved him from it as he would abhor to be thrown into the fire (of Hell)".
[Al-Bukhari and Muslim].
Lesson: as mentioned above in Surah Al-Ma'idah Ayat 53. And those who believe will say: "Are these the men (hypocrites) who swore their strongest oaths by Allah that they were with you (Muslims)?" All that they did has been in vain (because of their hypocrisy), and they have become the losers” In this Hadith, the love of Allah signifies the sweetness of Iman. The love of Allah and His Prophet [SAWW](PBUH) is the cornerstone of the Faith. When it is said that this love should exceed one's love for everything else in the universe, it means that what is enjoined by Allah and His Prophet [SAWW](PBUH) must be given preference over everything else, whether it is love for the wife, children, worldly interests, desires or whims. When there is a clash between the two, the former should be given preference over the latter.
